Travis Grady, a seemingly ordinary trucker who suffers from haunting nightmares that have an odd sense of familiarity to him, is out on a job near the town of Silent Hill. On the road, he suddenly sees a figure walking out in front of his truck and collapsing, forcing him to swerve and nearly crash his truck; though he initially has no luck finding the girl, he ultimately sees her run off ahead, and so chases after her, thinking she might be hurt. Instead he finds a burning house, and upon hearing a scream, enters to rescue the occupant; he pulls a young child from the fire, and collapses outside, waking later in Silent Hill.
Wondering about the fate of the child, he heads to Alchemilla Hospital, but finds it almost deserted. here he finds Dr. Michael Kaufmann, who denies that any girl with burns is a patient there. In another room, he finds a large mirror that contains a horrific reflection, a twisted "Otherworld" version of the room. The girl appears in the reflection and prompts him to touch the mirror, upon which he finds himself in the Otherworld...
Harry Mason and his wife find a baby by the road close to a town named Silent Hill and adopt her as their own, naming her Cheryl. Though his wife soon died, Harry Mason continued to love Cheryl as his own daughter.
7 Years later, Harry Mason decides to go to the resort town of Silent Hill with Cheryl. Strange events occur before they have even entered the town. A cop on a motorbike drives past them and only moments later Harry sees the bike lying by the side of the road and the cop is nowhere in sight. Soon afterwards a figure suddenly appears on the road, causing Harry to swerve the car and slide off the road. When he regains consciousness, Harry discovers that Cheryl is missing and that he has slipped into a strange dimension shrouded in fog. It's soon clear that this place is unlike any place he's been before. Strange creatures lurk within the fog and as Harry follows what he thinks is his daughter's silhouette all over town, he realizes that the town has a darker and more dangerous side to it.
James Sunderland has come to Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his wife, Mary, despite the fact that she had apparently died from an unnamed illness three years prior to his return...
When James first enters Silent Hill, he immediately realizes it is not the same beautiful town from his and Mary's past. In addition to the strange, omnipresent fog, the whole town seems to be rotting away and abandoned. Bizarre, vaguely humanoid monsters are also wandering the streets and most of the buildings, waiting to attack James. With his path to his first destination, the lakeside Rosewater Park, cut off, James enters an apartment complex, whose back alleys have the only other available route to reach what he believes could be the "special place" Mary says she is in the letter...
Heather is a seventeen year old girl. One day, while running an errand for her father at the local mall, she falls asleep inside a restaurant known as Happy Burger and dreams about Silent Hill. She finds herself wandering through a nightmare version of Lakeside Amusement Park.
After the coaster incident in her dream, Heather wakes up from the nightmare. Shaking it off as a bad dream, she exits the burger joint, calls her father and lets him know that she is on her way home. She encounters a detective named Douglas Cartland, who was hired to find her.
Heather thinks that he is a stalker and ducks into the ladies' restroom. She jumps out the window, but her way out is blocked on both ends, forcing her to find another way through the mall. Strange monsters are lurking around.
As Heather wanders through the mall, she encounters a woman dressed in all black who identifies herself as Claudia Wolf...
Henry Townshend is living in South Ashfield, a town half a day's drive away from Silent Hill. One day he finds himself mysteriously locked in his own apartment. He cannot escape through either the windows or his front door, which has been chained shut from the inside. No one, not even people standing directly outside the door, can hear him when he pounds on the door and cries for help. After five days of entrapment Henry finds a hole that has opened up in his bathroom wall. Armed only with a steel pipe that broke loose when the wall opened, a carton of chocolate milk, and a bottle of wine, he proceeds to venture into the hellish madness of "Silent Hill"...
Alex Shepherd, a Special Forces soldier, returns from an overseas tour of duty. After another nightmare concerning his younger brother Joshua, Alex wakes up in the cab of a truck driver who gives him a ride to his hometown of Shepherd's Glen. The town, named for a distant ancestor who helped found it, is covered in fog and deserted, with several roads having fallen into disrepair or simply collapsed into nothingness. At home, he finds his mother in a near catatonic state, murmuring about his father leaving to find Josh. Promising to find him, Alex leaves into the strange fog that started smothering the town...
